A child who likes himself will probably do well in school and throughout life. A child who doesn’t may have social and learning problems that stretch into adulthood.

Here are some simple ways you can build your child’s ego:

Love her freely, with kisses, hugs and words of specific praise. Discipline him fairly, including setting limits for behavior and establishing a schedule for meals and sleep. Let her explore in a safe environment. Don’t hover over her too much. Let him help, with household and garden chores, selecting his own clothes, setting the table. Be a role model. Act as you wish her to act. Applaud his ideas, and let him carry them out if possible. Zip your lip, if you’re ever tempted to talk about her weaknesses in front of her.
