It is a necessary step toward being responsible.

An accountable teen:

  • Keeps promises. An accountable person fulfills her promises, and even does a bit more.
  • Acknowledges actions. Mistakes don’t give you the right to make excuses. Instead, your teen should say, “I’m sorry this happened. Next time I’ll leave the house 10 minutes earlier,” or whatever is appropriate for the situation.
  • Doesn’t blame others. Saying another person was at fault for what you did is even worse than a lame excuse. Here, too, a brief apology, followed by an explanation of the lesson learned is the best course of action.
