You just have to know where to look.
Here are some ideas:
- Community centers may have teen rooms. Here, young teens can play games, shoot basketball or do homework.
- Your area may have a Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, YWCA, or JCC. These have afternoon activities.
- Some school systems are coming up with creative programs. In Boston, some middle schoolers learn gourmet cooking. Others run small businesses or publish newspapers.
All of these programs depend on adult volunteers called “citizen teachers.” If your area doesn’t have one, you might check into the possibility of starting your own program.
